Mishima, Sgraffito, Sprigging, Slip Trailing, and Impressed Texture

Mishima- Involves carving a pattern or decoration on the surface of clay then going back to fill in the carvings with glaze. Finally the excess clay is removed to create a cleaner and clearer design.

Sgrafitto-Involves using leather hard clay coated in glaze,and then scratched on the surface to reveal a layer underneath.




Sprigging- A technique for decorating and enhancing pottery detail by creating a vessel, then making other pieces to attach to that vessel before firing.
Slip Trailing- A technique using slip or underglaze to create decorative designs on the surface of the clay.
Impressed Texture- A technique that indents a design or textures into soft clay by pressing different shaped objects into it. Ex: coin, leaf, or lace
