5 Techniques Project

This piece displays 5 different surface techniques that add detail to projects. The 5 Techniques are called Mishima, Sgrafitto, Impress Texture,Slip Trailing, and  Sprigging. Mishima is when you carve a design in your clay, then fill it in with glaze. Sgrafitto is when you add layers of under glaze to your clay and carve designs through the surface of the dried glaze. Impress Texture is when you use a desired object with texture, then press it into soft clay to leave an impression of that object. Slip Trailing involves filling a syringe with wet slip or glaze and creating a design on the surface. Sprigging  is when you create smaller pieces of clay to attach to a larger piece of clay for additional detail.
I was inspired by an image I found on google, that's why I decided to try and create a plate like piece. For sprigging I chose to attach small  round balls  around the edge of my plate. For Mishima I scratched a snow flake like design into the center of the plate and filled in the line with dark  blue under glaze. For Impressed texture I pressed a patterned stencil into the outside edge of the plate, then went over  it with yellow under glaze.I displayed Sgraffito using light blue under glaze and then I scratched  some wavy lines into  the surface of the glaze. For slip trailing I used the same dark blue glaze and I lined the edge of my Sgraffito design. One thing I could have done differently is my impressed texture,I waited to long to do my pressed texture because I was busy with all  the other techniques.By the time I got to the impressed texture my clay was already leather hard and it was pretty difficult to make a defined design.
